Class Sizes & Staffing

New York City class size guidelines set the framework for how many children can be in a classroom. However, what makes the biggest difference is the way PS6 structures learning. Every classroom has both a head teacher and an assistant teacher, ensuring students receive more individualized attention and small group learning opportunities.

PreK

Class Sizes

NYC class sizes allow up to:
  • 15 students in 3K
  • 18 students in PreK
  • 25 students in Kindergarten
  • 32 students in Grades 1-5

The New York State Reduce Class Size bill states that by the 2028-2029 school year, the average class size in each school, district, and citywide must be reduced to meet the following requirements:

K-3rd Grade: 20 or fewer students
4th-8th Grade: 23 or fewer students

We have not yet received funding to make our class sizes smaller at this time.

Staffing
  • All 3K and PreK classes have both a head teacher and a paraprofessional assigned to support instruction and student needs.
  • In grades K–5, each class has a head teacher and an associate teacher, made possible through PTA funding.
  • Some classes may also include paraprofessionals assigned to support individual students based on specific needs or mandated services.
  • Additionally, many classes host student teachers throughout the year, depending on availability and partnerships with local teacher preparation programs.
