Curriculum
Our Pre-K program will offer a child-centered curriculum which will provide students with opportunities to develop socially, emotionally, physically, and cognitively. The curriculum is based on interdisciplinary units of study, where children will be able to choose from a variety of activities and experiences grounded in the Pre-Kindergarten Foundation for the Common Core (PKFCC). Play is an important part of the students’ day, as play develops the “whole child”. Through carefully designed learning centers, children will have many opportunities to demonstrate their understanding of a range of concepts. Centers will also provide teachers the opportunities to foster the social, emotional, cognitive, and physical growth of each child.
Teaching Credentials
Head Teachers hold Early Childhood NY State Certification, and meet the criteria put forth by the NYCDOE. They are members of the PS 6 staff.
School Hours/After School Programs
The school day will be 8:15 am - 2:35 pm, which is the same time as the rest of the school.
At this time there is currently no after school program for the Pre-K students.
Applying for Kindergarten the following year after being enrolled in Pre-K.
Even if your child attends Pre-K at PS 6, you MUST follow the procedures and apply for kindergarten during the kindergarten admission process next year. Enrollment in a pre-K program does not necessarily affect your child’s enrollment for kindergarten. PS 6 is a zoned school, thus kindergarten offers depends on the number of kindergarten applicants from several priority groups. Zoned students with siblings in the school and zoned students have priority for kindergarten placement ahead of non-zoned students who participated in pre-K at that school.
For additional information on priority of offering seats please refer to NYCDOE Kindergarten Admissions Overview.
